Climb Aboard the Galley is an exhibition that gives an excellent idea of the Galata Museum’s philosophy. Visitors learn history by climbing aboard a full-sized reconstruction of a seventeenth century Genoese galley and interacting with the displays. Visitors put themselves in the shoes of the galley crew, choosing to be a slave, a forced labour prisoner, or a volunteer probably paying off a debt. They explore the lower deck and climb up to the open rowing deck. Life on board is explained while interacting with typical characters of the time, listening to discussions between historical figures, and admiring rare artefacts and original works.
